January 6, 1930- November 19, 2018
Ramona lived a life filled with vibrant color inspired by nature. Her creative spirit, quick wit, and uncanny ability to see possibility in all contexts inspired her family, her friends, and thousands of her students.
Ramona Audley passed away peacefully on November 19, 2018 surrounded by her loving family. The eldest child of Robert and Ina (Lund) Hughlett, Ramona was a lifelong Lake Country
resident who enjoyed a forty-year teaching career and remained active in her retirement as a school board member and a prolific artist in a variety of media. Ramona’s soft sculpture dolls, whimsical garden art—including life size cows and antelope—furniture, jewelry, trapunto quilting, ceramics, and assemblage creations adorn the homes of collectors locally and nationally. Public art displays include her contribution to the 2013 Guitar Town USA Event in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Ramona’s fifteen-foot guitar, painted in her trademark bold floral design, greets visitors to the Waukesha State Bank.
In 1953, Ramona was smitten by the engagement ring Wilfred (Bill) Audley tucked into a box of Valentine’s Day chocolates and they were married in November of that same year. Bill remained an active “co-conspirator” in most all of Ramona’s creative endeavors throughout their forty-nine year marriage—a love affair grounded in humor, spontaneity, and steadfast commitment to family. Bill has been sorely missed since 2002.
Although Ramona’s lifetime accomplishments and accolades were numerous, she was most proud and often boastful of her six children and five grandchildren—“These folks are not only achievers—they focus on giving back and making this world a better place for others.”
Ramona will be gravely missed by her children: Peggy Audley (Dr. Christopher Babbitt) of Hudson, Jennifer Audley of Waukesha, Terry Audley (Dennis Sweda) of Hartland, David Thomas Beech Audley (Dr. Ann Vertovec) of Lake Bluff, IL, Holly Audley (Dr. Rick Hohfeler) of Oconomowoc, and Christopher Robert Beech Audley (Denise) of Oconomowoc as well as her grandchildren: Tess Audley Babbitt, Samuel Franklin Beech Audley, Benjamin Edward Beech Audley, Wilfred Albert Beech Audley, and Emma Marie Audley. Ramona is further survived by numerous relatives and friends—including centenarian, Aunt Ella Mae Clausen (Lund).
Many thanks to the Visiting Angels, Waukesha Memorial Hospital Palliative Care, and the staff of Lynnwood of Delafield for their high-quality care and compassion.
The family plans a spring 2019 memorial event honoring Ramona’s favorite season.
As an avid gardener, Ramona delighted in spring’s promise of growth, renewal, and fresh opportunity.
Memorial donations to the Milwaukee Rescue Mission, Heifer International, and the Humane Society of Waukesha County are appreciated.
