Dr. Gerald L. "Jerry" Harned, age 80, died January 22 at his home in Deer Park, IL. He was a retired orthopedic surgeon and a long-time resident of Hartland, WI.
Dr. Harned and his wife, Joy, who died in 2014, raised their family and lived on Beaver Lake for many years. Active in the community, they were founding members of the Lake Country Congregational Church and members of the Chenequa Country Club and Beaver Lake Yacht Club. After he retired, they also established a residence in the Wildcat Run community in Estero, FL.
Dr. Harned began his medical practice in Waukesha, WI in 1973 and was a founding partner of Orthopaedic Associates of Waukesha (now Orthopaedic Associates of Wisconsin), retiring in 2000. He was Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery. He was a president of the Waukesha County Medical Society, chair of the department of surgery at Waukesha Memorial Hospital and clinical instructor at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
Dr. Harned was born in Madison, WI and educated at Shorewood Hills School and Madison West High School. He was graduated from the University of Wisconsin, where he was a member of Sigma Phi fraternity.
He earned his medical degree from the University of California at Irvine, served as a flight surgeon in the U.S. Navy, and did his orthopedic residency training at Wayne State University in Detroit.
Dr. Harned was noted for his good humor which his friends and family fondly recall with countless "Jerryisms." Joy and Jerry enjoyed travel, taking many family vacation and ski trips and several foreign tours.
He is survived by children Nicholas (Sandra), North Barrington, IL; Allison Evanston, IL; and Benjamin (Christine), Port Washington, WI; grandchildren Jackson Weaver, Charles (“Charlie”) Ragnar, and Natalie Joy (“Tilly”) Harned and Fitzgerald (“Fitz”) Richard Hannan; also, a brother, Jack (Eileen), Bloomfield Hills, MI, and sister-in-law Judy Cowan, Bentonville, AR.
A Memorial Service and a celebration of the life of Jerry Harned will be held at Chenequa Country Club at 3:00pm on April 14, 2018.
